Warfarin Monitoring

Warfarin is used to prevent blood clots and prevent embolism in conditions such as deep venous thrombosis, atrial fibrillation, mechanical heart valves and other hyperclotting conditions. It requires frequent blood tests to monitor the therapy and this can be performed with a finger prick test that gives results in a few minutes.

Why should I do this at a doctor's office instead of a lab?:

Warfarin is a drug with a narrow therapeutic window - too much causes bleeding, too little doesn't help you at all. It is important to know if you are in the right range right away, so that you can adjust the dose right away. If you wait to play phone tag with the lab and your doctor's office, then you may miss this information and wind up in the hospital with a bleed or an embolism.
