Symptom Review
Dr. Miller and Michael Ciccarone, DNP take your history and decide which test fits the question

EKG, pulmonary function tests, and rapid strep, flu, and COVID-19 testing in one visit.
Fast Answers, One Visit
You feel the tightness in your chest and wonder if it is serious. You have a cough that will not quit, a sore throat that came on overnight, or a fever that might be flu. Maybe your commercial driver's physical requires an EKG and you need it today. Waiting days for a referral, then more days for an appointment at an outside lab, then more days for results feels impossible when you just want to know what is wrong. Unanswered symptoms steal sleep, disrupt work, and delay the care you actually need.
In-office diagnostics change the timeline. Dr. Miller orders the test, we run it in the exam room, and she reviews the results with you before you leave. An EKG takes about 5 to 10 minutes. A rapid strep, flu, or COVID-19 test returns results in 10 to 20 minutes. Pulmonary function testing finishes in 20 to 30 minutes with instant data. Same-visit answers mean faster treatment, less anxiety, and a care plan that starts today rather than next week.
The Science of Same-Visit Testing
In-office diagnostics is a suite of point-of-care medical tests performed and interpreted inside our Primary Care in Venice, FL office, giving you results during the same visit. Paradise Family Healthcare offers EKG, pulmonary function testing (PFT), and rapid antigen tests for strep, influenza, and COVID-19.
An electrocardiogram (EKG) records the electrical signals your heart produces with each beat using 10 small adhesive electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs. The recording, called a rhythm strip, shows Dr. Miller whether your heart rate, rhythm, and conduction are normal, or whether you have signs of arrhythmia, prior injury, or current strain.
Pulmonary function testing measures how much air your lungs hold and how quickly you can move it. You breathe into a spirometer, a device that converts airflow into numbers clinicians use to diagnose asthma, COPD, and restrictive lung disease. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, spirometry is the most common pulmonary function test and the standard of care for diagnosing and monitoring chronic lung conditions.
For an EKG, you lie still for about a minute while the machine records. For spirometry, you take a deep breath and blow into a mouthpiece as hard and long as you can, repeating two or three times. For a rapid test, a clinician swabs your throat or nose and drops the sample into a test cartridge.
Dr. Miller reviews every result with you the same visit, explains what is normal and what is not, and writes the next step into your care plan. If a result suggests something beyond our scope, we coordinate referrals right away.

Low-Risk Testing
In-office diagnostics at Paradise Family Healthcare are low-risk, non-invasive procedures. Most patients experience no side effects at all.
EKG testing involves only surface electrodes and carries no known medical risk. A few patients notice mild, temporary skin redness or a pulled hair where the adhesive pads were placed.
Pulmonary function testing requires forceful breathing, which can cause brief lightheadedness, a dry mouth, or mild coughing. Patients with severe asthma, unstable angina, or a recent heart attack should tell Dr. Miller before testing so we can decide whether to proceed or refer out. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, spirometry is safe and widely used but should be performed by trained staff who monitor for these rare reactions.
Rapid strep, flu, and COVID-19 testing use a throat or nasal swab. You may feel a tickling or brief gagging sensation during the swab. False negatives can occur with any rapid antigen test, especially early in an illness, so Dr. Miller may recommend a confirmatory test if your symptoms do not match the result.
Tell Dr. Miller if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, use oxygen, or take blood thinners so she can tailor testing to your situation.
Most in-office diagnostic tests at Paradise Family Healthcare are covered by commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicare Advantage plans when the test is medically necessary. That means if Dr. Miller orders an EKG for chest pain or a pulmonary function test for chronic cough, your insurance typically pays the claim with only your copay, coinsurance, or deductible owed.
For uninsured patients or tests that are not covered (for example, pre-employment screening or travel-related COVID testing), we offer transparent self-pay pricing.
Self-pay pricing covers the test itself, the clinical staff time, and Dr. Miller's same-visit interpretation. You leave with a written report and a care plan.
Our front desk verifies coverage before your visit whenever possible. If you want to confirm a specific test will be covered, call our Venice office at (941) 488-2332 and our staff will check with your plan.
